This book was amazing! I love when I find a book that people hype up to be awesome that actually is awesome!!

This book follows Bree, a 16 year old girl who has recently lost her mother in a car accident. Three months afterwards, she moves to a prestigious college for a new beginning to clear her head. However, on the first night of school, there’s an attack from a demonic being. Bree discovers that she can resist the memory wiping spells that someone else casts on her.

Okay I'm adding the actual review 5 months after I've finished this because I realise I really didn't talk about it here at all.

God, this book was so good.

I'll start with my issues with this book before getting into the amazing stuff.

stuff i didn't like:

the plot was a little clunky, it wasn't all too coherent to me at times, that being said, this book is definitely more upper YA in my opinion, like 15-18 years old. Which doesn't actually have a point at all since I am 15, but whatever.

I just think the plot could've been a little tighter, it was a tad too slow paced sometimes for my taste.

The worldbuilding was really cool, but again, just kind of clunky. There was a lot of information that I was not prepared to be kind of bombarded with all at once, I might need to reread before I get to Bloodmarked.

Sel kind of ... sucks? I hope he gets a legitimate redemption arc because I was not vibing with some of the stuff he did.

stuff i did like:

Holy god I love Bree, not just her as a character but the way she was written. By far one of the most realistic, authentic, powerful, and enjoyable characters I've ever read about. Bree hate will not be tolerated over here. I am so excited to see where her development goes, especially after those last 50 pages (iykyk).

The world is so cool, even if I didn't understand it a lot, it's just a really interesting setting and structure. I adore the training montages, I'm a sucker for them.

Nick is my BOYYY, I love him.

Greer is awesome, Alice is awesome, I love Will and I need to see more of him as well. The side characters are awesome, is what I'm saying. They don't feel like devices just serving the MC, they feel like legitimate people.

This book is the pinnacle of YA fantasy, like seriously. It's got all the cliche tropes but it does them all so well. Even the love triangle, I don't outright despise either of the love interests, something that's been a really annoying thing with the books I've read ... (thanks Powerless and Shatter Me.... not).

Praying for love triangle turned polyamory, but we'll see.
