Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
5.0
I didn't expect the book to be so different to the movie. The basic story is the same but the atmosphere and ending is entirely different. That's not a criticism, I enjoyed the explanations of 1980s/1990 palaeontology and science as seen from the point of view of the book. It's a really spectacular scifi novel. Hammond is an outright villain as opposed to a caring grandfather and a man who made a great many mistakes.
Ian Malcolm is a completely unlikable monologueing-idiot in the book and I feel was the taking piece for the author's own views... This is the only real criticism I have for the book. Conflating unrepentant capitalism with science as one and the same is a disservice to both and any issues they have. They were lucky to have Jeff Goldblum or I think the movie wouldn't have done so well with the mathematician.
