The Corn Maiden and Other Nightmares by Joyce Carol Oates

4.0

This was my first experience with Oates' short fiction, which is apparently taught in literature classes nowadays. I can see why. She truly seems to excel in short form and especially in these creepy and atmospheric stories. I really loved the titular piece - actually a novella - and enjoyed most of the others. My only major complaint is regarding the format - I listened to the audiobook and the same narrator read the first and second stories, which lead to a bit of confusion about where one ended and the next began. But that may have just been me. All in all, an excellent collection and I look forward to reading more of her short works.
