Cupcakes at Carrington's by Alexandra Brown

I was really excited to find this book at my favorite bookstore and immediately grabbed it up. It was on my Wish List for quite awhile so I couldn't wait to read it.

Lesson learned. Reader beware - book jacket summaries are often deceiving (this isn't my first time) and as a reader, I wish publishers and authors would be more open about what the book is truly is about before a reader wastes good money on a crappy book.

How disappointed I am in this book! I was looking forward to a fun, light-hearted, good chick lit book to read and relax with. Instead what I found was a moody, often dark-toned novel where the main summary ended up being the side story to a darker, more depressing family storyline of the main character. What a big disappointment!!

The main summary that's posted here on GoodReads as well as the book cover makes it sound like a fun chick lit romp that takes place at an upscale department store and has a bit of a mystery. That part of the story was fun and the only reason I remotely gave this chick lit a 2nd star. The characters were nice, probably not my favorite characters of all time but not bad. Unfortunately, what I didn't expect was a depressing and downtrodden story line of Georgie's past and family history. I felt that it dragged the entire book down and more often than not, overshadowed what was supposed to be the main story line. Also, the side story line of Georgie's financial distress smacked all too much of a Sophie Kinsella 'Shopaholic' rewrite story - and yes, Sophie does it way, way better.

So yes, I'm definitely disenchanted with Alexandra Brown and this novel, this being my first one of hers I've tried. Sad to say I was hoping I'd really love this book as it's apparently the first in its series.
