I'll Give You the Sun
by Jandy Nelson
I'm sorry to say that this was my first DNF for a while, and if you're new to the book nerd lingo, I did not finish it. I'm a bit disappointed to say that I'm going to have to return this book to my TBR (to be read) pile and for good reason:
1) The story was not bad.
The author's writing style was one that I immensely enjoyed and it was one I could see other young adult contemporary authors trying to emulate. It dealt with deeper and darker topics that I had wanted to delve into for a long time and it handled them in a very delicate sense. I enjoyed the premise of the book and the synopsis made me want to jump right in from the very beginning.
2) I read it at the wrong time.
As I usually try to do, I went into this book blind and with very very little knowledge about what it was about. I like to experience the full of the novel for myself. This caused me to read it at the WRONG time. This book deals with very heavy topics and I tried to read it in the midst of my summer vacation. The title was misleading for the first half of the book at least and I was expecting a nice summery read, which was not the case. I'm positive I would have enjoyed this novel a good deal more over the fall or winter than during the summer.
3) I read this book towards the end of a reading slump.
I had just come out of a slump hoping to read an uplifting book filled with summer vibes and light heart-ted tones, but came out of a lump reading a slow cumbersome contemporary filled with topics best fit to read a later time. It did not take this book long to drag me into another slump and I unsuccessfully tried to force myself through it.
Head my advice if you're going to read this. NOT A SUMMER READ
