Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life by Bryan Lee O’Malley
2.0

I have to be honest, I was not the biggest fan of this. I read it for class, and it wasn’t a very laborious read but I just couldn’t stop thinking about how terribly it portrays all the female characters and frames the masculinity of Scott. The woman are only defined by their relationship to Scott, and him having a 17 year old girlfriend doesn’t sit well with me (nor does the racial politics surrounding her that I won’t even touch here). Ramona is such a “nerd’s ultimate fantasy woman” it’s shocking, and the fact that Scott literally has to fight her exes in order to date her just screams toxic masculinity to the highest degree.

All that being said, I thought the dialogue was for the most part well written and clever, and I liked the way O’Malley used the medium of the comic panels to tell the story in an effectively interesting way. A “good comic” but the story itself just left a bad taste in my mouth.
