Monster
by Walter Dean Myers
I was first introduced to this book when I took a class in college called Adolescent Literature. I recently went back and reread the book and still found it to be very well crafted and thought provoking.
The premise is about 16-year-old Steve Harmon who is one of three boys on trial for murder. The book provides poignant commentary on race and racism, the USA prison system, and the overall USA criminal justice system.
The narration style of this book is well executed as it goes back and forth between personal journal entries and movie script narration. Not only does this provide characterization of Steve and his love for films, but it also displays the heaviness of trauma and the desire to disassociate, to create distance from the trauma in order to process it and live through it.
While this book is a fast read, it is a hard hitter. I would also provide a Trigger Warning for this book as there is a scene with rape. It's not graphically described or anything like that, but it could still be very hard for certain individuals to read.
Overall, it's a good read and a book I would recommend to others.
