The Girl with No Shadow by Joanne Harris

4.0

I enjoy Joanne Harris' books and this was no exception. While it did take me a bit longer to get into it, once I did, I found it hard to put down. The tension as the book nears the final chapter is great and I found myself anxious to see where it would take us.

I listened to this as an audiotape, so perhaps the reader's voice played a role, but I found the characters to be wonderfully developed. Of course some of them were introduced in Chocolat, but Ms. Harris still stayed true to the characters she initially created.

My only concern with the plot was the fact that Vianne/Yanne trusted Zozie so quickly especially since she was so helpful to her without asking for anything in return. This seemed to go a bit against Vianne's natural instincts to be wary of the kindly ones.

If you haven't read Chocolat, you can still enjoy The Girl with No Shadow, but it certainly enhanced the experience if you had. While the story takes place 4 years later than Chocolat and is set in Paris, the history of Vianne, Anouk and Rosette is slowly revealed as is the background of Zozie.
