I got this book (and it's sequel) years ago at a flea market, simply because it had a T-Rex on the cover, I was really into the prehistoric. I read, I liked it, I shelved it.
Now it's 2018 and they did a movie based off of it.
I want to check out to movie but since this one of the few times I actually own the book the movie is based off, I decided to re-read it first.
I remember really liking this book the first time around.
Now? Not as much. The story's still good, and I will admit I like the thought of a giant destructive prehistoric shark like Meg still lurking in our oceans. And I even found myself wondering which camp I would fall on if such a thing were to happen IRL: destroy it or save it.
But i didn't like the descriptions then, still don't like them now. As fun to imagine as it is, the thought of a captive Meg being a success stretches my suspension of disbelief a little too far, if a great white can't be kept in captivity neither can a Megalodon. I'm no doctor but I'm pretty sure you can't actually survive in another animals stomach if they swallow you whole. PETA wouldn't actually care if the Meg lived or died as long as it wasn't put in captivity.
All of that would be forgivable if I at least liked the characters but there's so many of them to keep track off and with the exception of best friend Mac, the main, and Terry and her dad they're all unlikable and annoying. Rooting for the Meg to eat them annoying. Which I guess is a good thing considering most of them do get eaten. But until their deaths they're

They: Have an expert in Megaladon.
Also they: Don't listen to him. Mock him. Ignore everything and anything he's tried to teach them. Proceed to endanger people cause they think they can outsmart a giant prehistoric shark. Learn absolutely nothing from their mistakes.
They're annoying. Stupid. Horrible people.
And maybe that's why I didn't like this book as much as I originally had, it's so mean spirited from the beginning. I already know humanity's all of those things, I know people can be horrible I don't need nor do I want to read 400+ pages of it.
