From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry: The Killing of Vincent Chin and the Trial that Galvanized the Asian American Movement by Paula Yoo

emotional informative medium-paced

4.5

my first ya nonfiction which is very different from anything else that I’ve read. Yoo introduces the story with Jarod, son of Vincent’s fiancée at the time, Vickie Wong and the reader feels like you’re learning about the events of the night and aftermath along with Jarod. while I knew the overall summary of the events before reading this, there were so many details that I had no clue about and Yoo presents things in a very approachable and understandable way. she is never reductive and does an impressive job of humanizing the main people involved, explaining each person’s backgrounds and previous experiences that might have something to do with how they reacted and chose to act in those moments. Yoo also draws a line between how community came together to Asian activism today. I appreciate how she was able to make a difficult event approachable to a larger audience and that more people have the opportunity to learn about this history.
