One thing I appreciate about this author: she allows her characters to be conflicted and imperfect in their thinking. I think she portrayed the juxtaposition, or should I say hypocrisy, of many of those who fought for the union army very well. Too many stories that take place during the Civil War paint things to have been very black-and-white, no pun intended. The truth of the matter is that, even as we were fighting for the abolition of slavery, many of us still held prejudices deep in our hearts. I appreciate this authors effort not to whitewash history. The only thing I would change about this book really is its length. I would also speed the plot up a little bit.
