The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry
by Gabrielle Zevin
Raelene recommended this to me years ago and I loved it. It is well-written, the characters are beautiful, flawed, and oh so real. It is meta-literary, but I enjoy the connections and variations on themes and stories. Most of all though, those references gain so much more meaning as Fikry’s story and character development progress.
Spoilers:
On a personal note, the ending was so hard. I cried on the airplane. He dies of the same cancer that killed my sister and the book was recommended to me well before that, and Raelene didn’t even remember when I brought it up after, so I got blindsided. Not a complaint, but very real, and written with great insight into the struggles of life, death, and deciding what to leave behind for those we love.
