Langton, a journalist, decided to write an investigation of rats when the exterminator in his NYC apartment building let him in on the admission that rats had won the war--humans can only attempt to keep them in check. Following this disturbing information, Langton tracks down a whole cast of eccentric rat experts, from historians of the black death, medical researchers, meat cutters (rats in meat lockers develop thicker coats and a layer of fat to stand the cold), sewer workers, kids in pet stores and an engineer who explains how the front side of a rat’s incisors are as hard as some grades of steel.
