The book continues with kestrels point of view,where she is in the palace,and betrothed to the emperor's son.kestrel still loves arin who is now the governor of herran despite being the prince's fiancee.the emperor clearly thinks kestrel is as evil and cold hearted as he is and will rule the empire the way he wants it.arin and tensen,the minister of agriculture of herran comes to the palace to attend kestrel's engagement to the prince,and slowly arin finds out the what kestrel did in order to help the valorian emperor win the north which makes him hate her.over time,arin realizes his mistake and confronts her when her father is nearby in a secret compartment listening to her play and confronts her which leads to tensen being killed when kestrels father reads the letter intended for arin which he never gave arin after telling him the emperor's poisoning of herran through the water supply before getting kestrel caught and sent to the north
