ruhigilder 's review for:
My Sister, the Serial Killer
by Oyinkan Braithwaite
“Who is to say that an object does not come with its own agenda? Or that the collective agenda of its previous owners does not direct its purpose still?.”
Reasons To Read:
If you like short books with detailed characters
If you want to read a macabre and humorous thriller
If you enjoy books set in different cultures
My Sister, the Serial Killer is a novel that basically follows the storyline mentioned in the blurb, but still manages to remain utterly engrossing.
This contemporary mystery book is about the lengths an elder sister goes to protect her beautiful, spoiled younger one. Ayoola has a tendency to murder her boyfriends in “self-defence”, and her sister Korede has been cleaning up her messes without complaint. However, when Ayoola starts dating the man she likes, Korede must choose between protecting her younger sister, or turning her in to assuage her own guilt and protecting the man she secretly loves. It is the ultimate Sophie’s choice.
The title is everything the story is, dark, straightforward, and so entertaining!
Oyinkan Braithwaite writes in a style I didn’t know I liked. Her sentences are short and to the point, chapters a couple pages at most, but she still creates characters that are deeply flawed and human.
As a serial book reader, I can guarantee this is one of the most different and refreshing mystery novels you’ll read. It's basically like that tub of popcorn you buy at the movies, delicious, riveting, salty with a bit of bite, and sadly, over before you know it.
Ru Recommends: 4.5/5
Fun fact: Braithwaite herself is an older sibling, and her intimate understanding of the responsibility thrust on Korede to look after Ayoola helped her write their characters!
