Falling for the Highlander by Lynsay Sands

medium-paced

2.5

This was too cringey for my liking. Too much slapstick humor. There's literally a scene near the end where 4 of the brothers get into a fight that's described kind of like those cartoon graphics where they just show a cloud with x's and !'s coming out of it. And I never liked Murine's main personality trait, her fainting. Then we learn its because she just doesn't eat enough!? She's just a dainty bird woman. She also just went along with everything, she has almost no personality.

~4 of Saidh's brothers show up on Murine's doorstep to sell her English half-brother, Montrose Danvries, some horses, but he doesn't have the money and offers Murine in place of payment (whoring her out). Offended, the brothers leave. Murine overhears and also sneaks out since her brother plans to whore her out to a friend for money he can use to pay for the horses. The brothers encounter her and learn she's the Murine, their sister Saidh's best friend who saved her. They decide to help escort her to Saidh, and along the way each of the brothers consider marrying her to "save her" from her half-brother's scheme.

Dougall is the 2nd oldest brother after Aulay. I think Rory might be next? Then there's Conran, Geordie and Alick. Dougall takes a fancy to Murine but wants to "test her out" first to "see how she responds" and they nearly go all the way but are interrupted. Afterwards he acts cold to her (he can't control himself so wants to keep his distance until they can be married properly) but she interprets this as her acting like a slut. She decides she'll look into marrying Aulay since he was wounded in some accident and his face is fucked up and his intended left him.

They stop at their hunting lodge where the first attack happens. A barrel of cider left outside is drugged. Murine and Rory don't drink it so they're awake when the lodge is set on fire. Everyone escapes to the Macdonnell's homestead but on the way Murine is shot in the back with an arrow. She spends the next few days healing and constantly being put to sleep by Rory's medication / sleeping draft. When she wakes up she and Dougall have sex and he's like we even more so now need to find a priest, except he's missing. Then a servant boy goes missing. Then Murine gets kidnapped. The servant boy knew about secret passages in the castle and he was forced to tell Montrose who kidnaps her.

Turns out Montrose and Connor.. his half-brother? idk the relationships are weird, made a plan to murder Murine's dad and switch the wills so that Connor inherited the main estate and Montrose got the other one? and also Murine and her dowery. He blows through all the money and has been blackmailing Connor since he has the original will. Connor kills Montrose and is about to kill Murine too when Dougall shows up and kills him. Then everyone lives HAE.
