Cockroaches by Jo Nesbø

Thailand should be beachy and fun and light but when Harry Hole is around, things get dark - I guess the name of the book gives a pretty big clue. Harry is called to Thailand to investigate the death of the Norwegian ambassador to Thailand - he was found in a seedy motel brothel with a knife in his back. Little does Harry know, the powers that be in Norway don't really want a proper investigation. They hope that Harry will muck things up and the case will just fade away. However, Harry is stubborn and he won't give up until he has found who is responsible for the death. When he meets the widow and 17 year old daughter of the ambassador, he realises that everything is not what it seems. He partners with local Thai police and forms an interesting working relationship with them. I'm enjoying getting to know Harry, even with all his flaws.
