I agree: Contact and what is Alien will always be unknowable, unknown, and likely inconceivable. Was I necessarily compelled by that as the sole narrative? No, but that’s subjectivity for you. This is a wonderful novel, and, interestingly or not, I remarked to a friend, when I was halfway through, that I wish I could read the original Polish and he paused in his doorway, the light of our own Sun silhouetting him in careful consideration, before he said “this (the English) is still good. It’s like a dessert.” Upon completing my first read of this novel, I find myself agreeing.
