What was the point of this book? I was intrigued for the first half but then it just became boring and repetitive. Another gross scene, another unlikable character, nothing added, no wisdom gained, no compassion felt. I struggled to finish it and only did so bc I thought there would be an aha moment or a shift in tone. Some larger revelation, something that would punch me in the gut. NOTHING. Bland. Boring. Pointless.
Gross things just to be gross. No beautiful or poetic metaphors, no mirror being held back to me so I could witness my own shadows.
Every single character was revolting, mean and empty. I thought ok, it’s a satire? And a criticism on politics, power, religion (yawn). Ok, so for sure at least the people working at the manor have some sort of wisdom or strength or something to contrast all this vile behavior from the people in power. No. They were terrible too. Ok maybe the villagers, no. Terrible too. Everyone was stupid and mean and nobody redeemed themselves, no growth, nothing learned.
She tried to tackle so much in this book and failed at everything because she couldn’t get past her own desire to be “shocking.” Mad boring. 🥱
