“welcome to the FAYZ. Wherever, whenever or whyever that is” – Michael Grant: Gone Series

Sam Temple watches his teacher disappear before his own eyes. In a blink every person over the age of 15 is suddenly gone. With no adults and no rules, confusion quickly becomes panic. Amongst the chaos Sam, Quinn and Astrid the Genius set out to find out what is happening to Perdido Beach. On a mission to find Astrid’s little brother, they make a bigger discovery, there is a barrier cutting them off from the world.

The kids must quickly learn to deal with the fear, hunger and desperation that comes with losing those around them. There is another type of change happening as well, kids developing powers. Desperate for leadership, the kids are quickly drawn to the charismatic and ruthless, Caine from the towns private boarding school.

Bent on control things quickly spiral, as kids choose sides between the rich and powerful Caine or safe, reliable Sam. But time is running out, as kids who turn fifteen begin to disappear.
Addictive, Violent, Enthralling, Mysterious, Amazing. I can not praise this book enough. Michael Grant creates a world it is hard to walk away from.

The characters are brilliantly done, complex and reluctant and confused and brave. Sam and Caine especially are written so well. Sam is exactly the kind of person you want when shit hits the fan. Reluctant but rational. Sam is a person of action with a strong moral centre. He may not want to step up, but ultimately he will. Caine isn’t evil, he is ruthless and ambitious and obsessive, willing to do whatever he can to have power of any kind. He is better than evil, his character is complex.

This is a gripping read, not only because of the mysterious powers or brilliant characters but because it feels so real. Grant does not shy away from the chaos, violence and sadness of this story. Kids die, some are killed and some are simply missed in the confusion. It can be hard watching those who need the most support, being torn down by the bigger and harder. It can be a frustrating read, you just want to yell at them to do be smart, they need to help the littlies, ration the food don’t let the bullies take over. Yet this is what make the story so good, because these are just kids, kids who are scared. This is what kept me reading, the big question of will the overcome?

If you are a fan of sci-fi and young adult fiction, I cannot recommend this book series enough. It has so much to offer, and so many places to go!
