Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: Yes

Somewhere around May 2024, a post was floating around the site formerly known as Twitter. I read it, guffawed, and immediately added Beloved Pet Fish onto my Want to Buy list. The ancient text said the following (spoilers):

things you need to know if you wanna read the disabled tyrant's beloved pet fish:
- no he doesn't fuck the fish
- the fish is a transmigrated human
- he doesn't fuck the fish
- yes they have fish babies
- but he doesn't fuck the fish
- they also have a human baby

I'm glad I listened to this post, even if it did take me a year to get to it. Better late than never, right?

Anyway, this is a system transmigration novel. Which essentially means our MC wakes up one day in the world of a novel he's read, with a system guiding him along the way. Except, unlike any self-respecting transmigration, our MC is not the main character, or the villain, or even a barely mentioned extra. Instead, he's ... a fish. A fish on the cusp of being made into soup, no less! Naturally, this is somewhat concerning for Li Yu. Luckily, things work out, and he finds his way into Prince Jing's rooms. Now all he has to do is... *checks note* become his beloved pet, save a few characters from dying, regain his human body, and... what was that about postpartum??

It's all a lot of fun. Utterly ridiculous, entirely improbable, and requires a level of "do none of you find it weird?? truly??" but hey, that might make it even more fun. The imagery conjured by this novel is really without comparison.

But they're so cute. So stupid, but so, so cute. Li Yu especially. But hey, the dude was 18 years old when he... died? Fell asleep? Was he yeeted out of his body? Unclear. Anyways, 18-year-olds are dumb, so I guess I can give him a pass.

I never thought there would be a day when I would be shipping a fish and a prince, but here I am. Enamored. Utterly besotted. "Kyaaaa" -ing over how Li Yu wraps his tail around Prince Jing's finger, and the latter smiles in return. Adorbs

You need something cute and light to read? You pick this up. Simple as that. Turn your brain off and just let it decompress with two cute idiots.

I will finish this "review" (pffft) with what has been going on in my head while reading because of the aforementioned tweet. Read this to the tune of the iconic Elijah Wood wig interview:
Do you fuck fish? Have you fucked fish? will you fuck fish? when will you fuck fish?
