In the Woods
by Tana French
dark
tense
slow-paced
This isn't as good as my favorite book from this series (Faithful Place) but I liked it more than my least favorite book from this series (Broken Harbor), making it a perfectly acceptable entry in the Dublin Murder Squad cannon. I would argue that despite being the first book, this isn't the best one to start with- if you're looking to read some Tana French, skip it, start with The Likeness, and come back later! The crime is a lot darker than in any of the other books in the series, and the detective is less compelling. Other than that, it hits all the things I love in a Tana French novel: desperately sad Irish cops, tragedy, main characters making dubious choices, and more tragedy. A perfect read for a rainy day.
