Our Year of Maybe by Rachel Lynn Solomon

5.0

Rachel Lynn Solomon is a master at writing novels that feel so genuine and real. I felt that in I’LL MISS YOU WHEN I’M GONE, and I felt it in OUR YEAR OF MAYBE, too. I think a lot of it has to do with what my expectations will be versus what Solomon delivers. For example, on this story, Peter and Sophie are longtime best friends and Sophie believes if she gives Peter her kidney, he’ll realize he loves her. In that situation, some might ship them - yes, let them fall in love!! But that’s not what happens. That’s not the point of the story. It’s narrated by both of them, and it’s clear that things don’t match up. At the same time, the story still left me satisfied at the end. I liked reading from Peter’s point of view, as he is bisexual, and I also liked how the story explored toxic relationships and friendships. It’s something I wish I’d had when I was in high school. Looking forward to Solomon’s next novel.
