Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda
by Becky Albertalli
November 2019 reread (7th read)
I just. Love this book so much. I don't think I can ever give this less than 5 stars. It's just stuck in my brain and it's never getting out. It will just forever be one of my favourites and I'm perfectly okay with that. Reading this is always so comforting and feels like coming home (if that makes any sense?) I know exactly what I'm getting and it just feels so good and this just means so much to me and I don't think there's anything more I can say that isn't in my original review so I'm just gonna go now.
Original review from October 2017
This. Book. Was. Amazing. I have no words to describe how good this book was and how much I enjoyed reading it. I went to four different book shops to try and find it and it was so worth it!
What I love most about Simon vs. the Homo sapiens Agenda is, that's it's so realistic. Some YA novels are completely absurd and don't really make sense, but with this it is not the case. Becky Albertalli really captured what it's like to be a teenager and to also be a part of the LGBTQ+ community.
I found I could really relate to Simon and he was a very likeable and realistic main character. I think, he's the type of character that just stays with you.
I literally can't think of anything bad to say about this book. I love the story and the characters. I love how it's been written and I just love everything about it.
There's just one thing I want to address; if you know or suspect someone is gay, DON'T out them if they don't want to come out. Because if you do this, like Simon said, you are taking away their right to tell people about their sexuality their own way. And that is not okay. I'm looking at you, Martin Addison.
Also, why don't straight people need to come out? Why is it always the default? From no one, everyone should have to come out and the more awkward it is, the better. Of course, the better alternative would be that no one would have to come out at all.
In conclusion, I fucking loved this book. It is probably one of my favourite books ever and everyone should read it. All I want to do right now is cry, eat Oreos and read Simon vs. the Homo sapiens Agenda again. 100% deserves 5 stars
