Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

4.0

This is the second time I’ve read this book and I noticed so much that I missed!

For one, I don’t really like the character of Mr. Bennett. I’m sure that’s how Austen wrote him, but I picked up on a lots of distasteful things. There’s even a whole paragraph about his contempt for his wife. We all see Lydia as a reflection of Mrs. Bennett, and this time around I also saw Wickham as a reflection of Mr. Bennett: impulsive and immature, finding themselves in a relationship with a woman they don’t like very much. It made me sad. There’s a couple mentions in the book about Mr. Bennett’s partiality towards Elizabeth and unfortunately I realized it’s because she seems the least “girly” of her sisters, which sadly perpetuates the stereotype of making fun of things girls like or things they like to do.

The characters are just phenomenal. Like I been knew, but this time I REALLY been knew. I love the juxtaposition of Darcy and Wickham; one is flattering and friendly in the beginning but turned out to be a scoundrel, and the one who was thought to be a scoundrel at first is the actual good person. I loved loved loved the character development in Darcy. None of the movies do him enough justice (except for maybe the Colin Firth version. But can we all admit that Matthew Macfayden is the superior Darcy? Thank yeewwwwww). I loved the conversation Darcy and Elizabeth had at the end where they cleared confusion and confessed their feelings. So tender
