It's impossible to transmit the full horror that was slavery in the antebellum US South, but Octavia Butler does a respectable job of capturing the emotional/psychic toll that it took on black people to stay alive and cope. I just didn't feel like the characters were able to grow in a way that was satisfying and led me on a fulfilling journey from the beginning of the story to the end.
