Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

5.0

where to do i even start
the beginning was a bit slow ngl like especially when she was recounting her late teens - early 20s but i guess it was needed to provide context and heighten the emotions we would feel later

growing up i had a bit of a tumultuous relationship with my mum much like how it was for michelle and her mum

i'm also mixed but unlike michelle i grew up in an area where it was very multicultural (michelle grew up in more of a white area)

and like michelle i had some thoughts about my parents relationship

the way she described her insurmountable grief, her utmost devotion and attachment to her mother was so heart wrenching for me

there was one particular section of the book where i had to pause because my pillow had become saturated with tears and it was removing the skincare i had on my cheek???

this was a painful read

highly recommend giving psychopomp a listen to after finishing this memoir as it was an album created to deal with the grief

oh yes and one thing that irked me throughout was her constantly saying her husband was too good for her and that she tricked him into marrying her like GIRL STOP THIS BEHAVIOUR NOW

anyway 5 stars
