War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy

4.25

Tolstoy never fails to make me care for the Russian high society. The characters and their everyday lives are filled with so much drama, it's impossible to look away. It's all very entertaining, and I definitely favored the social aspect of the story.

The remaining story filled with elaborate battle scenes depicting the true horrors of war did venture onto the more tedious side. Especially because Tolstoy occassionally inserts his own narrative, beyond the characters, to express his own philosophies and beliefs. It was very repetitive, and unnecessary to have the same things be reiterated over and over again. Not to mention the second half of the epilogue, which was an entire spiel about free will.

I did enjoy how he wove philosophical thinking into the character of Pierre though, as he was such a driven character on the search for answers. Which he also got in the end, to my great satisfaction.
