1.5

At its base, the concept was good…but unfortunately this book just wasn’t. 1.5 stars because I’ve read worse and at least you tried?

The writing is *very* basic and ultimately quite hollow. I don’t even really know what the plot is. The pacing was INSANELY fast and not in an engaging action-y way. No build up or tension, no depth, no way to really form any attachment to any of the characters. All bones, no meat.

The characters are all very flat and fit fairly rigid archetypes. Each one has a tragic backstory but I feel absolutely nothing about them because there just isn’t any depth to this book.

I wanted to like the FMC but she was just so boring and useless. The whole point of her personality in this book is to show that being the kind hearted, naive, sweet girl has a place in these types of stories but imo it does the opposite. I needed these aspects of her personality to actually have an impact on the story for this to work and it just didn’t. A complete fumble.

The obsession with the FMC by every single character and apparently every single person at the academy is too much. Is everyone at this academy evil? Why do all the non-mate dudes want to rape her? Also, does no one at the school care about the students that have been going missing/killed by D & T? There’s two other vaguely murder/missing students related subplots that gets lightly touched upon which seem to be of great concern to the administration but the 16+ dudes being offed to “protect” the FMC is of no concern????

Overall, this is a big no for me and I most definitely will not be reading the rest of this series. Truly shocked at this book’s high rating (especially on GRs)…very suspicious if you ask me.
