Captivating. A fast-paced adventure, a unique magic system, and lots of storytelling, with an unconditional loyal romance. a woman discovering the world for the first time who refuses to wear shoes, a broody knight who doesn't love being held under vows, and a quirky bat-like gargoyle who speaks like a child and calls everyone "Bartholemew"... go on a journey with a boy king and his knights to find mystical objects that hold magical abilities when they discover the gods they grew up believing in are not what they seem.
I loved so many things about this book. I LOVE Rachel Gillig's writing style, her storytelling, her pacing... it's all perfectly executed. She spent the perfect amount of time giving background on the main character, and introducing everyone else fairly quickly, reiterated the specifics of the world and the magic fairly often so nothing was confusing, and gave us another forward-thinking, sassy, STRONG female lead who is not a teenager. Most authors write a sheltered female as oblivious, dumb, naive, confused, and making all the wrong decisions. Not sybil. She's smart and grounded, and figures out the world and who she wants to be PRETTY quickly.
I seriously loved every minute of this book, and CANNOT WAIT for the next one. I will say it again: I'll read anything RG publishes. I'm a fan for life.
