The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún Vol. 1 by Nagabe

5.0

I was humming and hawing about whether to watch the anime or read the manga first. I am so glad I opted for the book as the art work is simply breath-taking. Truly soft and delicate yet gently disturbing, imprinting on your minds eye.

This is a tale about a land where society is divided in two; the light inside filled with humans and the dark outside swarming with cloaked, cursed monsters. You are introduced to a bright little girl, Shiva, and her bird like mentor, 'Teacher', who are living together on the outside, a supposed impossibility in this world. Shiva is waiting for her Auntie to return, cohabiting with Teacher who keeps her warm, fed and most importantly safe.

I love the fact this isn't yet another story about over-powered heroes that throws you in to the deep end. This is an intriguing slow build, where the author is taking their time revealing vital information, allowing you to explore the world and get to know the two main protagonists without the interference of much else. Its a refreshing change from most manga's I have read or watched.

I am very excited for the next volume.
