It would be very easy to dismiss the NYC scene of the early 2000's as a bunch of rich kids doing rock and roll cosplay. I mean, that's certainly how I saw most of these bands during their heyday. But the truth is, there are an awful lot of really good records that come from that scene. And not just from the much less ridiculous Brooklyn side of things. Lizzy Goodman's oral history of NYC in the early 2000's does a lot to reinforce the shallower version of the legacy. The people involved do a lot cocaine (and congratulate themselves for it), act "rock n roll" (and congratulate themselves for it), have a bunch of sex (and congratulate themselves for it), and generally behave like they've seen too many rock documentaries. But the music was pretty good.
