The Ship We Built by Lexie Bean

4.0

Ouch.

I think that word best describes this book. I don't know. I don't really know how to start this review other than expressing just the pain that this book brings. Especially considering the title I really hadn't expected the story that was written upon these pages.
Again this is one of those queer books that just brought tears to my eyes whilst reading. For that matter I do think that the style is extremely well-chosen. Rather than a normal story and the highly traumatising descriptions of certain events this book is made up of letters written in the perspectie of our main character; Rowan.
There's so many times when he switches names, pronouns, and questions his life, decisions and everything. It hits so painfully hard and even though I haven't expreienced any of this kind of abuse I know some friends that have, and oh the empathy and oh the pain.
I think I really am too much of an empath to be giving professional or quasi-professional reviews, heh. But hey, at least now we know that this book really does work.
Ah, and I really must also commend Lexie on their use of language. I think, written in the language that a ten year-old would use themselves, this book truly conveys its story. I don't know if there's a message or a moral, but in any case it is a worthy read.
