Humankind: A Hopeful History by Rutger Bregman

5.0

I can’t tell you how much I adored this book. I feel that, in a world of cynicism, fake news, conflict and uncertainty, this is the feel good book to read. And it really isn’t the happy clappy type.

Based on the premise of human beings being innately decent, Rutger Bregman infused philosophy with history, science, economics and psychology to try to understand what it really means to be human. He dispels classic (tall) tales of the past and presents counterarguments to studies and insights from previous thought-leaders, weaves in Hobbes, Rousseau & Machiavelli and shines a light on what could be - if we only believe in the good that can happen. All in good humour with good humour.

This isn’t a self-help book and I frankly wouldn’t know how to classify it. But it’s fairly anthropological, historical and philosophical. And a joy to read.
