Magic Rises
by Ilona Andrews
Again, really enjoyed this one but did have a couple of issues with it.
Firstly, I know this was meant to speed things up and get some action happening, but I wasn't a big fan of how Andrea and Raphael's relationship was suddenly drama free again! In the last book, they had a really big falling out because of Andrea not leaving The Order of Merciful Aid, and now they're engaged and happily together. I literally went back to the last book and searched for 'engaged' and 'proposed' and there was nothing - I didn't realise that it was just a big change that wasn't going to be explored in this book and was explained away in a sentence. It's not a huge plot-altering issue, but it would have been nice to have seen how they got back to their couple status because it did leave me pretty confused.
I also felt like there was a bit too much 'deus ex machina' going on with that tiny dude at the end. His name begins with A I think? Seems like a likeable enough person and I am looking forward to seeing him again in Book 7, but felt like a very convenient character. Even more so was Christopher. Even overlooking the short guy, Christopher was definitely a convenient plot device with his ability to create panacea, I'm really hoping there's more to him which, again, will come up in Book 7 which I am already part way through because I'm absolute trash with zero concept of effective prioritising.
I did enjoy the high stakes of this novel though, and hate-loved the angst between Curran and Kate. I knew Curran had some kind of plan but that he withheld it from Kate because she can't lie was an interesting choice. She's been capable of not letting Julie know the full extent of their blood bond for a while now which is arguably a greater secret, but this secret would have been too much? I'll go along with it because it made for a good plot but it did seem a bit out of character in my opinion.
But Hugh, oh my days, I can't be the only one who was sort of rooting for him and Kate, even just for a moment? Loved it and I really don't want him to die. I'm also getting to the point where I don't really understand why Roland or Kate need to kill each other so I hope that confusion is rectified too. But more Hugh? Yes please.
Onto book 7 which I think is where this series naturally concludes? I'm really looking forward to seeing how the whole story comes together. Not sure I'll read beyond that because I am slightly worried it will be trying too hard to create a storyline as dramatic as this one concerning Roland over 7 books.

Lol i hate myself. I know I said I’d stop reading but I haven’t and I’m currently 23.7% in. Goodbye degree. Goodbye success. Hello complete guilty pleasure in the form of paranormal romance novels.
