I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would, given the subject matter. There are some extremely dark elements to this story and I would caution anyone thinking of reading it to please check the trigger warnings. That being said, however, for someone born and raised into households very much like Violet’s and Kate’s, feeling the pride and joy of their eventual breaking that cycle was somehow extremely cathartic. I saw myself in certain aspects, but more than that, I saw my mother in Kate, and my grandmother in Violet. The courage it takes to break the mold and start over from nothing. It’s truly inspiring, and beautiful to read about. This story about generations of abused, maligned women reaching out to each other and propping one another up through their hardships, all with this tiny element of magical realism and witchiness woven through was just fantastic.
Graphic: Physical abuse, Sexual assault, Toxic relationship, Abortion, and Pregnancy
Moderate: Sexual violence, Suicidal thoughts, Car accident, and Death of parent
