I really went into this half-expecting I may not enjoy it. It's been awhile since I've read a classic and I have never given this one a shot before but I'm really glad I did. I can absolutely see why this story is a literary classic and I could probably go further on about it analytically, but truthfully, I read it for pleasure so...

I think it's a very harrowing tale that covers a lot of topics that would be very controversial in bringing up at the time it was originally written. It does a fantastic job of creating characters that are for the most part, very unlikeable and yet you are intrigued in their stories and how they will fare throughout. It's definitely not a romance by any means, but there remains some very powerful sentiments throughout in terms of love, obsession, codependency, etc.

Overall, it's definitely a slow read that you really have to settle into to get through, but once you're there, it really hooks you.
