It is spring chore season at my house and this weekend I needed to spend about three hours on a lawn mower. Eating into some serious reading time I decided to download an audio book to my new snazzy phone and listen to that as I made passes around the pasture. Now my biggest problem with audio books is their availability, it is usually such a hunt on the library’s system to find something that I’m interested that I get frustrated and just go with music instead. This time I lucked out and downloaded three promising titles and started with this one. I ended up nearly finishing this book in one day as I kept looking for more chores to work on so I could keep listening. Now my biggest complaint is that the next five books in the series are not offered from my library and I’m going to have to hunt them down through other means.
Now for the story… This book was quite fun, and again I am surprised at how well a male author wrote from the perspective of a female. Now I know that might be sexist of me, but I most of the time the urban fantasy books I read with a strong quirky female lead are written by women. That’s just how it is. Jace in this story was a great mix of quick wit, sensitivity, strength, and brains. She wasn’t perfect, which lead to credibility as a character. I also appreciated how she wasn’t over the top with her sexuality, there was just enough to spice up the story, but nothing really detailed happened on-camera sorta speak. This character really made this story for me and the narrator was a perfect choice to give her voice.
The premise of this story was interesting, a nice twist from the typical urban fantasy/paranormal reads out there. I like the alternate universe idea and can’t wait to see how all this universe and ours differentiate from one another. The supporting cast was a lot of fun and Jace’s golem partner was a hoot. I also am particularly drawn to the vampire Cassius too. I hope that we get to dig deeper into his persona in future books.
This was a great listen and I highly suggest it to urban fantasy or paranormal fans. If you like Chicagoland vampires,The Vampire for Hire, or Sookie Stackhouse series I bet you enjoy this one too.
