The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
by Arthur Conan Doyle
This reread is a long time coming. I'm a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and coming back to the beginning after completing the canon is very refreshing. I still think "The Five Orange Pips" is kind of crap; its mystery has only become more obvious, and Holmes tragically underestimates his enemy. "The Beryl Coronet" is a little too twisty. However, "A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle," and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" are all five-star classics. "The Red-Headed League" is a fun ride from inconsequential to massive. "The Man with the Twisted Lip" is a great play on class and perception. "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb" is horrifically macabre. The remaining four are all enjoyably and round out the first collection nicely. Also, Audible's edition with Stephen Fry is fantastic. He really brings the variety of Doyle's characters to life; plus, his introductions show both knowledge and reverence to the material.
