As I Lay Dying rightfully deserves its place in the American canon simply for what Faulkner does with language. That his experiments with narrative voice and perspective in this novel (and others of his) have had a profound effect on American (and international) letters cannot be denied.
I do have to say that beyond the prose itself, I felt that I connected more with the tragic characters of The Sound and the Fury than with the Bundrens of As I Lay Dying. I think people should read this novel, but more to gain a genealogical understanding of the development of Modernism more than anything else, really.
