Loveable characters: Complicated

An excellently written story and the audiobook had an excellent narrator.

I was only minimally aware of the situation in Romania behind the Iron Curtain and not at all aware of the revolution of December 1989. The complete and total control of a population of people, “secret police”, always at risk of being watched and listened to and being informed upon by friend, family and foe alike. How these people ever learned to trust again I can’t imagine.

Many parts made me gasp, cringe and even cry out, and while this is a fictionalized telling, so much of this happened to real people, of all ages. I was 6 in 1989, in grade 1, how would I have survived if I’d been pulled away from my family? If we were forced to live in concrete boxes with not enough food or heat? No awareness of the outside world and no one from the outside world knowing about us and not knowing who to trust.

And so much of the world seems hell bent on heading back down that road. What is wrong with us?
