One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

2.5

Things I liked:
  • The Nightmare.
  • The Cards.
  • Gothic fairytale atmosphere.
  • Most of the prose.
  • Emory and Ione as characters.
Things I wasn’t keen on:
  • Elspeth while intentionally dull at times was made increasingly less interesting as the novel went on and the Nightmare became compelling.
  • Ravyn, hate the spelling, more often than not fell flat along with the romance.
  • At times the cliched use of fairytale tropes, regardless of the intriguing setting, grew trite and bothersome.

Despite my mediocre reception I do like the idea and at times execution of the novel. Hope the sequel delivers on my wants.
