One for My Enemy by Olivie Blake
3.5
I normally find myself annoyed with Romeo and Juliet retellings so to have enjoyed this one far more than others felt satisfying. I loved the way that Blake separated the novel into Acts and Scenes (akin to Shakespeare), which also tickled my academic heart. I really enjoyed the two families presented in the novel; both families felt interesting and distinct. The magic system was also really fun and that aspect really reminded me of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and I would've loved to have that more explored from a POV or scene aspect (rather than just the epilogue at the end). While I did find the plot to be engaging, I do think the middle Acts were a bit sluggish than I would've liked. I do see how they paid off for the novel's actual conclusion, but when I was reading it, it was a slog.
