Great debut! Love the writing. The prose was nice and transported me to Malacca and the spirit realm. The second half really picked up and my girl Li Lan was going through it. I was going to give it four stars but the romance was a little lacking, I liked them together but he was barely in there so it was like why are you in love. 

didn’t like that she didn’t see Er Lang again at the end. I wish we could see her say those last words to him about him being a monster and her wanting to be his bride. They were barely together for the book and then we don’t even get to the the marriage acceptance. Also it seemed sad. It’s nice she’ll be with him for a long time but he’s basically going to whisk her away from all the people she loves and she won’t see them again till they die and maybe won’t see her mother? And he said he’d leave her on her own and she’d have to live in a small abode in the country? He really isn’t bringing anything. Like if that was supposed to be a happy ending it was like warm like tea left out too long to cool. So that’s why I gave it three stars. Glad she got her man and I liked him but boy did he have nothing to offer.
