The Midnight Star
by Marie Lu
Once again, I am wrecked. Broken. Shattered. And utterly destroyed by a book.
This is such a nice ending to a beloved series. It took me quite some time to finish the book, I admit but it is partly because of my attention issues and mostly because Marie Lu had created such a rich and vivid world that I had no choice but to savour it.
I have loved her style of opening chapters with excerpts from fictional books and plays set in the Elites world since Book 1. Naming cities and creating geographical landmarks is one thing but to create various forms of art for your fictional world? Just how huge is the author’s imagination? And here I am struggling to find words for my 3 page essay. Marie Lu, O Great Creator of Fictional Worlds, could you lend me your power the next time I have tests?
Fictional religions have always been a source of wonder for me and Marie Lu gave her all here. A whole new religion with a fresh set of gods, goddesses and angels. In this finale, alignments between these deities and the young elites start to make sense and it’s satisfying to see everything come together.
Character development is the theme of this book. Adelina starts out being probably one of most unlikable characters and ends up one of my favourite protagonists ever. But what I like most is she still is the definition of the anti-hero from the earlier part of the series and I’m glad she doesn’t get a personality transplant just to have her redemption arc here. Her character development is natural and not forced which makes it all the more meaningful in the end.
Mi Adelinetta- it’s been an emotional ride getting to know you. To share your fears and desires. It is sad to say goodbye to your favourite characters but I promise I will always remember you. And you, Magiano, Rafaelle, Meave, Lucent and heck, even Teren. (But not Violetta, I still don’t like you lol)
(P.S: This is my first Marie Lu series and I think it is an excellent beginning. I don’t think I’ll read Legend though. I’ll try others. Feel free to recommend me any Marie Lu book or any other book with an antihero lead and I’ll check them out. )
