Pullman writes with some seriously annoying, unnecessary, and fatally-flawed blind spots, but his world building and his characters and his revolutionary spirit are beyond exemplary. Overall, the trilogy is an absolutely sublime work of literature and a very pleasant surprise for me. (I was not anticipating that I would enjoy it--but in now rates as one of my top fantasy reads ever.) An extensive, detailed review of the entire series to come.
