Time After Time by Lisa Grunwald

4.0

A very pleasant read, perfect for a night out on the deck with a glass of wine. Great descriptions of the place (all set in Grand Central Station) and time (especially the depression and WWII). Not a fan of either romances or ghost stories, but it was worth spending a summer night with this story.

The whole thing reminded me of an adult version of From The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler - with all the action set without a beloved NY institution, where that institution (in this case GCS, in FtMuFoMBEF the Met) is a main character, if not THE main character.

Because of the limitations of their life (they have to stay in GCS and the adjoining hotel), their romance is pretty much limited to sex, since they can't really create a life together (although they act is if they would like to), which is probably more realistic than spending years just gazing at one another and doing a lot of yearning (Not that it's at all graphic or steamy).

Only complaint: Even though the author tried, I never bought Faye, the main character's rival for the hero's heart, as a real person.
