The Trackers by Charles Frazier
2.0

The Trackers by Charles Frazier was a decent read about Val, a painter hired to paint a small town post office. His boss has a wealthy friend, John, in the town who offers to put him up on his ranch while he paints the mural. However, the drama between John and his wife, Eve, interrupts Val's work when John asks Val to locate Eve after she disappears. What follows is an expansive journey across the United States and back again as Val follows clues to find Eve.

I really enjoyed learning more about the government programs aimed at trying to lift the country out of the Depression. I wish the story stayed more on Val and his work, too. I liked learning about the method and steps to setting up a mural and it reminded me of seeing one in my local post office. It was a little hard to switch gears from this descriptive imagery to a somewhat vague detective story. I felt the clues that Val followed were a bit too convenient, though the story did pick up once Val found Eve. The characters had some depth, but I still felt like they were missing something. Maybe a little too stereotyped? Or maybe the drama overpowered the personalities?

This wouldn't have been my choice to read if I didn't have to read it for my book club, but it was good enough to finish and I learned a few things about murals. Pick this up if you enjoy light mystery/detective plots or stories set in the depression.
