Captive in the Underworld by Lianyu Tan
4.0
I always look forward to queer romances. Growing up reading romances, there wasn't nearly as much representation as there is now and I am so grateful for it. When I heard that this was a lesbian dark romance, I was intrigued. When I read further that this was a Hades & Persephone queer retelling, I was beyond excited. And I really enjoyed this read!
This was a beautifully written story - the prose, the word choice, the world Tan built - it was stunning to read. And yes, the dark aspects of the relationship between Hades and Persephone were just that - dark. The scenes in the beginning were a little too close to non-con and were very questionable and I could understand some people not enjoying it. However, I will say that the real villain for me was Demeter, Persephone's mother. The mental, emotional and physical abuse that she wrought on Persephone infuriated me and she was truly the darkest part of this story.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book and I loed Tan's writing. I look forward to reading more by them!
