Boy Parts by Eliza Clark

3.0

[read this over the summer and forgot to log, therefore the review is just random thoughts from my notes app]

- so weird??? wtf???
- but i kinda enjoyed it in a psycho character study way
- love an unreliable narrator: she was so weird, violent and cruel but what made it more interesting was that she knew that
- she knew her power and what she was capable of, and she used that in every situation she was in
- got really gruesome and american psycho-esque by the end which really isn’t my thing
- but it fucked me up— meaning it was successful
- woven into this unhinged and gross stort is an interesting commentary on the male gaze, gender roles and power dynamics and how the protagonist twists all of that to her on benefit
- she is the villain of her own story with her own villain origin story (trauma, sexual abuse, just fucked up surroundings)
- she has no moral compass which makes this even more thrilling (minus these weird moments of reflection where she’s like wow i’m messed up, and then continues to be shit)
- gritty and gross and totally out of my comfort zone
